Vacation rentals can be full of fun surprises for kids, but unfamiliar environments also come with added risks, especially when water is involved. Before you confirm your stay, asking a few important questions can help you create a safer, more relaxing vacation for the whole family. 

Here’s your go-to checklist of questions to ask before booking a vacation rental, plus simple ways to help keep your family safer around the water during your trip.

Why Water Safety Matters at Vacation Rentals

Pools, hot tubs, lakes, ponds, splash pads, and even decorative water features can attract curious little swimmers. When families are away from their normal routines, distractions increase, making it even more important to plan ahead. 

Knowing what water hazards are nearby and what safety measures are in place can help you feel more confident before even unpacking your bags!

Questions to Ask Before Booking a Vacation Rental 

1. What Bodies of Water Are On-Site or Nearby?

Start by asking about every water feature on or near the property, including swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes or ponds, beaches or beach access, or even fountains and water features. 

Even shallow water can pose a risk to young children, so it’s important to know exactly what to expect before arrival. 

2. Is the Pool or Spa Fully Fenced?

One of the most important safety features to look for is a four-sided fence that completely separates the pool or spa from the home and yard. 

Ask: 

  • Does the pool area have a self-closing, self-latching gate?
  • Is the fence fully enclosed?
  • Are gates always locked when not in use? 

Barriers help prevent unsupervised access and create an added layer of protection for our kiddos. 

3. Are Pool Alarms and Door Alarms Installed and Working?

If doors from the house lead directly to the pool area, ask whether door alarms and pool alarms are in place, and if all alarm systems are tested regularly and functioning properly. 

These alerts can help adults respond quickly if a child unexpectedly enters the pool area. 

4. Are Pool Drains Properly Covered and Are Covers Intact and Secure?

Before booking, confirm that pool and spa drains are compliant and securely covered and that covers appear to be intact and in good condition. Proper drain covers help reduce entrapment risks and are an important part of pool safety.

5. Are There Specific Pool or Spa Rules for Guests?

Every rental property may have different safety expectations. Be sure to ask if children are allowed in the spa, if inflatables or pool toys are restricted, and if any other rules are in place from the homeowner. Understanding the rules ahead of time helps everyone stay safer and avoid surprises during your stay.

6. Are Life Jackets Available On-Site?

Some vacation rentals provide U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets for guests. Even if they are available, it’s always a good idea to verify sizes, inspect for damage, and bring your own when possible. 

Remember: floaties and inflatable toys are not a substitute for life jackets or adult supervision! 

7. Is There Space to Store Pool Toys Away From the Water?

Pool toys left near the water can tempt children to approach the pool unsupervised. Ask if there is a storage bin or designated area for toys so they can be stored away and reduce unnecessary temptation.
