This Is Not Acceptable: Summer 2012 Drowning Deaths Released
If you ever wonder why we do what we do, heres a sobering statistic for you:
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in Summer 2012 alone, there were 137 child drowning deaths in the United States. Of those 137, 100 or 73% were toddlers ages 1-4, making drowning the leading cause of unintentional death for children in this age group.
How many of these could have been prevented by enrolling these children in swim schools such as Goldfish?
Our mission every day is to help kids stay safe and confident in the water. From stories like Dylans, where he was able to swim to shore after falling off his grandfathers dock this summer, to a familys ability to vacation poolside without constant anxiety, were helping to create childrens healthy relationship with the water.
Aside from taking your kids to perpetual swim lessons, here are some things you can do to keep your kids in sight and safe when swimming:
- Always keep your child in sight: figures show that 39% of drownings this summer occurred after a child wandered off.
- Learn CPR.
- Dont rely on flotation devices alone to keep your child safe in the water.
- Dont keep standing water in bathtubs or in buckets when toddlers are around.
And, we know its not summer yet, but take a look at our Safe Summer Swimming guidelines to make sure your pool or spa is outfitted properly.
