How Winter Progress Makes For a Safer Summer
We get it… summer feels so far away right now. Winter hats are mysteriously multiplying around the house, we’re reminding our kiddos to grab a coat, and everyone’s a little stir-crazy from being cooped up inside.
But while we’re bundling up and daydreaming about sunshine, popsicles, and pool days, there’s one thing we’re already thinking about: water safety. Because here’s the thing, summer will be here before we know it, and when it comes to swim skills, a little planning now can make a big difference later!
Every spring, we see the same story play out. The weather warms up, families start planning vacations and pool parties, and then it hits: my child doesn’t know how to swim yet. While swim lessons are always a great idea, starting in late spring or early summer means kids are just beginning to learn essential water safety skills… right as water adventures are popping up everywhere.
That’s why starting now is so important! Sure, a cozy 90-degree pool sounds pretty amazing when it’s chilly outside, but more importantly, swim skills take time to build. If your child starts lessons now, they can head into summer stronger, safer, and more confident in the water. Here’s a taste of what they could learn before swim season arrives…
The foundation to float safely on their back
This one’s a big deal! Learning how to roll onto their back and float helps kids keep their face above water and stay safe if they ever need a moment to rest. It’s a foundational, confidence-boosting, life-saving skill.
Feeling comfortable going underwater
Putting their face in the water can be scary at first, but practice makes progress! When kids get comfortable underwater, they’re less fearful and more confident, which means more fun and safer choices in the pool.
Finding the closest wall to safety
Did you know the nearest wall isn’t always straight ahead? Swim lessons teach kids to stay calm, look around, and find the closest exit, even if it’s behind them. That awareness is a game-changer when it comes to water safety.
Climbing out of the pool
It may seem simple, but for tiny swimmers, getting out of the pool is hard work and a key skill to know. Practicing this skill helps kids build strength and independence, and yes, it could be life-saving in an emergency.
Treading water
Treading water doesn’t come naturally; it takes practice, focus, and calm bodies. With consistent lessons, kids can learn how to keep themselves afloat and stay safer in and around the water! If your kiddo isn’t quite there yet, now’s the perfect time to start. Swim skills don’t happen overnight; they become instincts with consistency, practice, and encouragement. Weekly swim lessons help kids feel prepared, confident, and ready to make waves safely all summer long!
Because when summer arrives (and it will, before we know it!), you’ll be glad your swimmer is ready to jump in with confidence.
