At Goldfish Swim School, we know just how important it is for kiddos to learn, grow, and thrive in environments that prioritize them and their needs. In honor of Children’s Health Month, we’re diving into all the ways swim lessons can help children be their safest, happiest, healthiest selves!

It starts with, believe it or not, the colors on the walls! What appears as a colorful, tropically-themed space for kiddos and their families to enjoy, is just the surface level of how incredible our schools are. Each and every Goldfish Swim School was designed to be the perfect backdrop for kids to do some serious growing and learning.

Not only does our tropical theme encourage fun and play, but it also boosts imagination, which is crucial for a child’s social learning and development.

“Encouraging children to consider alternative possibilities beyond the most available ones can make them receptive to learning new things.” – The Questioning Child: Insights from Psychology and Education.

It’s no secret that within our four walls, our #1 priority is safety. And an important part of Children’s Health Month is focusing on safety as well as health.

We teach kiddos the skills they need to be safer in and around the water. And how can they learn to be safe without a safe place to learn?! (Say that three times fast!) Our schools across North America are staffed with Ellis & Associates certified lifeguards that oversee the pool at all times. These lifeguards have gone through some serious hands-on training and are always watching over our swimmers and their instructors to make sure everyone is as safe as can be while in and around the water. They maintain regular training and development to be sure they are always showing up to the pool deck with the best skills and knowledge possible, so that they can provide YOU a Golden and safe Experience!

We’ve created a safe space, with people in it to keep our members safe, so it only makes sense that we develop the safest curriculum, too! Our research-based curriculum was designed with child development and safety in mind, answering the question – ‘how do children learn best?’. We know that kiddos learn best when they are having fun more specifically, engaging in different stages and types of play that cater to their age and development. Hence, The Science of SwimPlay® was born!

Safety is a priority through the curriculum, and is the focal point of every swim lesson. From taking short breaks and having freedom while playing, to learning to “crab” walk, and to roll over to take a breath, we’ve put safety first every step of the way.

“What some people might see as ‘fun’ is serious learning: building comfort in the water, learning how to roll over and float on their back to call for help, learning how to pull themselves out of the water. In addition to swim skills, children learn their own limitations, how to use safety tools like life jackets, and rules like only swimming when adults are with them…these are all important aspects of swim lessons and water safety that reduce drowning risk.” – Dr. Molly, Motherly

When we think about all of the benefits of swim lessons, we can’t leave out how great it is for little ones’ bodies AND their brains!  While we’re focusing on teaching kids to swim, there is so much happening behind the scenes that is contributing to a healthy kiddo, like…

Physical Exercise! Improving strength, endurance, balance and so much more!

Cardiovascular Health! Swimming helps your heart and lungs work together as a very efficient team.

Aiding Digestion! Who would have thought?! All that movement in the pool helps little bellies work their best.

Improving Sleep! A parents dream! Exercising all of their muscles really takes it out of them.

Reducing Stress and Anxiety! While we’re keeping our body healthy, we have to keep our minds healthy too! Swimming helps to reduce stress and boost little ones’ moods.

The list goes on and on. Though we may be a little biased, we truly think swim lessons are one of the best things a parent can do for their kiddos. They learn to be safer in and around the water, get moving to stay active and healthy and grow and develop all along the way!

We are so proud of our schools and their commitment to continuing to help parents raise happy, healthy humans during Children’s Health Month and all year-round. Every detail has been thought out (and thought out again!) to ensure we have a safe, healthy environment where kiddos can learn, grow and develop.
