To our friends at Goldfish Swim School in Farmington:

How can we ever thank you for what you have done for our family? What has happened, because of YOU, has positively altered our lives. We hope that knowing that, you will feel gratified and realize that your work really does make a difference. Please share this with whomever you like. If any parts of this letter are ever used as a testimonial, we’d like our names to be changed.

Our daughter, Darby, will be 8 years old this month. We started her in a Parent-Toddler swim class when she was just 5 months old. Like many parents, we wanted to expose her to the water at a young age and assumed that that would eventually lead her to love to swim. Even in those early classes, Darby would scream whenever we weren’t holding her securely. We continued with swim lessons for the following 7 years, with very little progress.

In addition to having a problem with her vestibular system (a “vestibular sensitivity”) and low muscle tone, Darby is extremely body-aware and fearful. This combination had made it impossible for Darby to learn to swim. Over the years, Darby participated in: group lessons, group lessons with best friends, group lessons with a teacher who works with children with special needs. We’ve also tried: private lessons, private lessons with special teachers who work with special needs children, and even private lessons with a Physical Therapist. Darby went to a summer camp (for three years) that advertizes, “We teach kids to swim”. They were extremely encouraging and kind, but we had no success with any of these instructors or situations.

I had numerous friends who took their children to Goldfish Swim School. They were all so happy and their children were successful! As a parent, I feared and ached for my daughter. She was missing out on birthday parties and beach parties, and being left out at camp. I had avoided Goldfish simply because I believed that if it worked for “everyone”, it could never work for Darby because her needs were so special. Last Spring, in an act of true desperation, I made the phone call and set up a trial lesson for Darby.

Of course, Darby was hysterical when we arrived. Darby and I both received such gentle warmth and kindness. Although Darby cried for the entire first lesson, her first teacher (Mr. Joe) somehow broke through. When we left, Darby actually said, “I loved it.” And I cried. I stood in the Goldfish lobby, and I cried. Our very first success in seven and a half years! I knew then, Darby would swim.

For weeks, this crying continued. Never did we feel that we were annoying or too much to handle; instead, we felt that we were being cared for by an entire team. Teachers, deck –leaders, free hands took Darby from my arms (no easy feat!) and took her into the water. We got extra help, encouragement, high-fives, and advice from Joe, Meghan, Zoe, Amanda, Katie, Laura, Brandi, Kayla…. Little by little, week after week, the tears subsided; Darby’s head went under water; a teacher could let go (with hands oh so close). Along every step, I felt every Goldfish staff member was figuratively holding my hand. I felt that every person there was personally invested in Darby’s swimming success.

Tonight, Darby became a “Star”. I waited until I got home this time. But when I got home I cried. Darby can swim. I stare at that sentence and the tears flow. Darby can swim. Goldfish did that; Goldfish taught Darby how to swim. How is it possible? Is it the method? The warm water? The competent and kind instructors? The professional staff? In part, yes. But it is much, much more than all that. It is the personal “touch”. Each time Darby needed to change teachers, or had a new fear, or took a step back, the Goldfish family noticed and made the best decisions for her.

So, how can we really thank you? Darby will go to overnight camp this summer, which would not have been possible had it not been for you. Darby will go to pool parties and beach parties, and she won’t be the only one with a parent in the water. Darby can swim, and you, Goldfish Swim School came together, as a team, and did that. All we can do is say “thank you”, and tell you that we are forever grateful, and spread the word so that your remarkable business continues to thrive.

From the bottom of our hearts, we THANK YOU,

Parents of Goldfish Swim School of Farmington Hills

    Dear Goldfish Swim School,

We wanted to let you know about the fantastic experience we have had this summer with Coach Mike at your Birmingham Goldfish Swim School location.  Our two children, Avery (6) and Connor (5) were non-swimmers when we came to Goldfish late in June of this year.  We started the kids in Goldfish’s Jump Start Clinics and began the journey of every day swim classes with Coach Mike.

Over the pat six weeks, our once non-swimmers have progressed to Star-level (Avery) and Glider (Connor).  Coach Mike has been a try professional in every sense of the word.  He has provided excellent instruction in a fun and nurturing atmosphere.  Our kids have truly looked forward to swim class each and every day.

We cannot thank you enough for providing a place where children are able to develop swimming skills in a proven, step-by-step approach.  And, most of all, thank you to Coach Mike for all of his hard work, dedication and support of our children during the past several weeks.

    Very truly yours,

    Matthew

    - Goldfish Experience

    Dear Goldfish,

I just wanted to send a quick note to let you know how great Miss Nikki has been to my children, Wyatt and Hannah.  Last summer, they attended swim lessons at a local swim club, which I spent more time biting my nails than anything else…especially after I had to pull Hannah out of the water (on the second day) because the instructor expected her to swim to the edge, then turned her back on her and Hannah sank to the bottom.
This year, we decided to give Goldfish a try because I had only heard great things about it. From the first day, I was amazed at how great the kids did. Nikki told me after the first lesson that she could tell Hannah was trying to establish whether or not she could trust her – not even knowing the experience we had before. That sold me – that she was able to pick up on that!

We have to take a break for a bit, for a number of reasons (today was the kids’ last lesson and we were all sad about it), but hopefully we will be back soon.  Miss Nikki was wonderful, encouraging, supportive, and made learning to swim fun for my kids, even when they were apprehensive at first.  I just wanted to make sure you all knew what a great experience we had there, and how much we appreciate Nikki!
    Sincerely,
    Ann
