We know what you’re thinking. It’s wintertime; time to take the kids out of swimming lessons and plop them into skiing or snowboarding. While that might be instinctive, we’re here to tell you otherwise…and it’s not just because we happen to run a swim school.
As you recently read, there are many advantages to what we call perpetual swimming lessons. For instance, it:
- Reduces the rate of swim skills lost due to elapsed time between seasons
- Allows your child to progress at his/her own rate, and not the pace of a swim session
- Makes scheduling a breeze
But what about that modern myth? We’re not putting our kids in the water in the winter; are you crazy? They’ll catch a cold!
Actually, your child is more likely to contrive a cold from someplace like daycare or at the mall than at swimming lessons. Colds originate from a virus, and in no way, shape or form are pools better conductors of viruses than other germ-clad places. The simple fact: swimming, or even being cold, will not make you more likely to catch a cold.
Of course, Midwestern winters aren’t what we like to call pleasant…unless you’re an avid winter sportsperson, of course. But there is one thing we can say: swimming, unlike other sports, is not dependent on the weather. It is a constant. Unless there’s two feet of snow on the ground, Goldfish is going to be open and warm, the water at 90°, in fact. So, if you’re looking for a smiling face amidst the winter gloom, we’ll be waiting to welcome you and your kids. Think of it as a little tropical oasis to contrast the dreary days.
Moreover, swimming lessons each week are a great source of exercise for your kids, who might be planning to swap outdoor activities for a spot in front of the TV. This way, you will have a regularly scheduled workout!
